'Well Hung'

, June 09. Fine Art Degree Show, Bonington Building, Nottingham.

'Well Hung' was live. Winched 5 feet into the air in a cattle sling, I performed for short and intermittent periods of time, as a sculpture of a horse. At othertimes I was a member of the audience at my Fine Art Degree Show, dressed in a horse costume. There is an ambiguity between the performer and the character, and a blurred line where performance can manifest instead as a live sculpture that fascinates me. 'Well Hung' explores whether that moment can be defined. (As well as a fantastical idea that to wear a horse costume can bequeath you with the attributes associated with the species). The work opens up discussions around performance Vs sculpture, notions of the absurd and the futile, and there are a set of questions and contradictions around gender that are at play - I am for one, as the performer, not "hung like a horse" because I am female. (The audience is reminded of this as I nonchalantly totter off in the built-in high heels to get back to my glass of wine and carry on looking at the show). A special thanks to Allan Buxton, Jack Crisp, Ross McCormick and Sam Minton for pulling my chain. And to Heather Tait for taking photos.
