Open Spaces Art Collective: PARK-ING.
September 06. Open Spaces Art Collective, Lewes.
"SEND IN THE CLOWNS: Relax in a park...ing space!"
Just the ticket: Kaptain Krikey and Major Tock make themselves at home
Two Lewes women struck a blow for pedestrian power - if only for an hour.
The couple, who would identify themselves only as Kaptain Krikey and Major Tock, bought an hour's parking ticket and used it to camp down, complete with a real grass lawn and deck chairs, on a parking spot in Lewes High Street.
The fact that they were wearing clowns' makeup and Major Tock sported a colander on her head only added to the wacky fun. Kaptain Krikey, who admitted to having an allotment in Lewes, said 'We are reclaiming parking spaces with grass.
We haven't broken the law. We paid for the space with a parking ticket.'You could call this a very temporary Lewes park, enlivening the street scene, improving the quality of the urban human environment and putting a smile on people's faces.'
The 'lawn' might have measured only 12ft by 6ft but a passer-by and his dog stopped by for a chat.
Insprired
'So much better than seeing a car sitting on this space, don't you think?' quipped Major Tock.
The stunt, held outside Cafe Nero on Thursday last week was inspired by US organistation called Rebar which aims to open eyes world-wide by temporarily transforming metered parking spots in parks.
The organisation aims to 'reclaim the street for people... at least until the meter runs out'.
In other words, a 'park-ing' place.
A spokesman for highways authority, the department responsible for overseeing NCP parking charges in Lewes, said: 'We can only enforce maters relating to vehicles.
'We would, of course, prefer people not to use parking spaces in this way, but at least they bought a ticket.'
