Artist Statement

My primary motivation comes from a fascination with the façade. There is an ambiguity between the performer and the character, and a blurred line where performance can manifest instead as a live sculpture. At some point a transition is made from one role or state to the other, and I am interested in exploring whether that moment can be defined.

Recent works have explored a fantastical idea that to wear an animal costume can bequeath you with the skills or attributes associated with each different species. In an attempt to reintroduce a sense of play into the everyday and rupture what is understood as being logical, my performances present how the empowerment that can be gained from a costume can be utilized as an alternate means to over-come a problem or achieve the impossible.

My work is very much a play, and one in which the audience play a complicit role; through video and live performances (as well as ones which exist as residue) an engagement is more than a requirement, it is often a condition of the works accessibility. As well as staging work in such a way that the audience are forced to relate physically to it, the titles play an integral part in how the ideas unravel. Functioning like puzzles, they pose challenges for the audience to de-code and ultimately endeavour to make them to see a hint of logic in the absurd.
